Build a Targeted List With Exit and Entry Pops – Very Effective

Done correctly, on-site pop-ups may increase leads and sales by attracting the right customers at the right moment and giving them a more customized experience.

For any business online, the ability to build a targeted list and make sales is vital.

This post shows a great way to do that.

If you employ this strategy then your list will grow!

Quality Vs Quantity

Despite what you might think, building a list is not hard.

All you need is a simple landing page and an auto responder.

Pay $100 to take out a solo ad and your list will grow.

Solo ads

That said, if you do just that expect poor results.

That is like walking into a bar and giving you number to every person you meet.

You might strike lucky but most people didn’t want your number and will think you are a weirdo.

Instead focus more on WHO gets on your list and where from rather than how many.

Let me explain.

Pop Ups Explained

Using a popup, you may rapidly grab your visitors’ attention with an informative or promotional offer that appears above your content.

Popups often contain a call to action (CTA) to entice visitors to do a certain action.

It depends on your marketing objectives what action you want your visitors to do, as you’ll see in a moment.

Despite the fact that you’re undoubtedly aware of what popups are, you may be questioning whether or not they really function.

Well, yes, they work, but only if properly implemented.

Many online marketers make the mistake of utilizing the same kind of popup in all circumstances.

Example Convertboxes

Instead of customizing their site, they’ll use a generic popup campaign and place it on all of their pages.

Next, people will start to question why conversions are so low.

They don’t know why no one is responding.

What they should be doing is customizing pop ups for various pages and situations.

Sure, that requires more work but the results are better.

And there are tools around that make this fairly simple to implement.

Better Tech

The sophistication of pop-up technology has increased dramatically in the past several years, though.

You may now display your popups just to certain individuals, at specific times, and in specific locations on your website..

With this, you can target just the people who are most likely to perform the desired action when they see your pop-up message.

Pop Ups

Because of this, your conversion rates increase, your audience expands, and you generate more revenue.

These pop ups can be triggered depending on how the website owner has set things up.

For example:

  • As soon as you land on the page
  • After a set period of time
  • If you try to leave the page
  • If you scroll or stop scrolling

Lot’s of options.

and these pop ups can appear at various places on the page and have a different number of end goals.

End goals could include:

  • Watching a YouTube video
  • Opting into an email list
  • Clicking a link to get a discount
  • Many more

Done right you can implement personalized offers, lead capture forms to the appropriate visitors at the right time.

NOTE: There are many tools that do this and they have pros and cons.

I use this to make exit and entry pops.

What is an Entry Pop?

When a visitor first comes at your site, an entry or welcome popup is shown to them.

The image below is one kind of entry pop.

It appears after 5 seconds and covers the whole page, so that prevents the person from reading the article.

They have two options.

To close it, or to opt-in.

The key thing here is that thais ONLY shows on an article which is about how to grow a small channel to 1000 subscribers.

Entry pop 1 - Welcome mat

And, it’s also set to NOT show to people who have already opted in to the list before.

Finally it is capped so it only shows to the same person 3 times before not being shown anymore (unless they clear their cookies).

This entry pop style is also known as a welcome mat and works because the lead magnet on offer is congruent to the article.

Think about it.

Someone comes to the page as they want to learn how to build a YouTube channel.

They are then presented, in the form of this entry pop, a chance to get a YouTube channel mastery roadmap.

Many opt in and this converts well.

It would not convert as well on an article about YouTube ads though.

Entry pops do not need to cover the screen.

Here is a different one that works well.

entry pop

This shows on an article about YouTube ads software.

It pops up in the bottom left of the screen and has to benefits.

I get more views to a video.

People click to go to a sales page of a YouTube ads software I sell.

It’s 100% congruent to the article too so all the traffic is laser targeted.

A generic, ‘click here to make more money’ style pop up would have much worse results.

So those are entry pops, what about exit ones?

What is an Exit Pop?

When a visitor’s cursor goes away from the website, a popup appears, providing a bargain they can’t reject, thereby keeping the prospective client.

This is a different example of an exit pop.

It appears in the bottom left of a page that reviews a video creation tool called Wave.video.

Exit pop

Again, people are consuming the article as they are somewhat interested in the software and are considering whether or not to invest in it.

Not only does that pop up build my list, it allows me to follow up via email to promote wave.video and also other video related tools.

Win win.

Commission Strategy For Newer Sites

Ranking for certain buyer keywords can be very tough.

Try ranking your website for Viddyoze review or Nord VPN review and you’ll see what I mean.

So, if you wanted to promote such products, but have no real chance of ranking, and cannot afford ads, what can you do?

Well, you can rank for a much lesser known, worse option.

SEO

By that find a similar product that is not as well known with much less competition.

Write an in-depth review BUT have an exit pop as people leave.

That can be a button(your affiliate link) to get the hard to rank product with an amazing bonus or discount.

People will click on it.

How do You Set Them Up?

Obviously this depends on the software you use but with ConvertBox, the tool I advocate, then you can follow the guidelines here.

Now, despite all this, you’ll get people that say you should not use pop ups as they annoy the reader.

Let’s elaborate a little on that.

Why All The Hate For Pop Ups?

Why People Hate Pop Ups is that so many marketers over use them.

18 pop ups on one page, all irrelevant.

Go to a cooking blog and they have so much stuff gong on, you need to set aside ten minutes to close it all off before you can even get to the recipe.

You do not have to use them on every page.

One is enough, although on this blog I do sometimes have two, and even that can be overkill.

Just use common sense and you’ll be fine.

Here is a video on how to use pop ups to build a targeted list.

Ok, so you set all this up and you have exit and entry pop ups galore.

You are now building a targeted list.

Is that it?

Not quite.

You still need to make sure you have decent emails sent out to these people to make sure you can convert them into sales.

The Emails That Follow Up With Your Prosepcts

A significant amount of time and effort goes into building an email list.

Collecting these potential customers takes time.

As a result, it’s very irritating when the people on your list don’t do what you want them to (open emails, click links, take advantage of offers, and so on).

And wouldn’t it be great to have some peace of mind after all that hard work?

Do you have peace of mind knowing that you have a large list of devoted clients who know, like and trust you enough to make investments in you or your recommendations?

The Conversion Point

Most people do not and here’s why.

Email Marketing The Masses Do….That Fails

Most people follow what the gurus preach.

Which is this…

Squeeze page that isn’t too long.

Usually blind in that you cannot see what you are getting.

By offering an email address in return for a lead magnet as a “carrot” (bribe).

If you are a potential customer, imagine that you are a real person (who has feelings and emotions) who arrives on this squeeze page.

But you get confused as to what the offer really is.

Bit like these headlines….

Free Report Reveals How an Ex Pizza Delivery Boy Made $4,563.67 in 25 days…etc

There isn’t much of a reason to join this email list other than to receive the report or video when it’s released (the shiny object or bribe).

It’s a risk as you do not really know what it is.

Consequently, the you use a fake email address, usually your “junk account,” to contact.

Then forget about it and never even open up the first email.

The Right Way to Write Emails

It all starts with intent.

A person goes to a page on your site to learn something.

You provide them with what they want.

But you also have a pop up to give them more of what they want.

A freemium gift they cannot say no to.

So they opt-in and open up the email to get it.

Your email is fun, light hearted and encourages them to respond.

This allows you to communicate more personally with some people.

Future emails that go out are different to the rest of the stuff littering their inbox.

A bit of storytelling, some fun, you using your voice and not being overly hypey or stilted.

Conversions

I like writing stories, and they stick out more than most other emails in my experience.

To get the click (to content) and the task done, segue into a marketing pitch.

If you advertise affiliate deals, doing this and directing them to a genuine review may also assist with conversions.

Stories, at least in my opinion, are more enjoyable, help you develop a connection with your audience, and are preferable to concentrating on creating a huge list and pushing new items every day.

Social proof

And here’s an email that was promoting a video creation tool for shy folk

Subj: Prague’s Faceless Babies

Have you ever been to Prague?

One of it’s buildings, the Zizkov Tower, is

called the second-ugliest building in the

country.

So they decided to make it more attractive

and culturally acceptable.

And, apparently in Prague, that means adding

art that could fuel many nightmares.

10 giant, faceless babies were added in

various places around the tower, crawling

up and down it.

Spooky!

Faceless babies might not sound too nice,

but how about faceless videos?

Having to show their face is what stops

thousands of folk from getting into YouTube

and video in general.

Missing out on tons of sales and

leads in the process as it converts better

than any other medium.

Now while I personally think getting on

camera isn’t scary at all, many do so this is a

godsend

Make Money with Faceless Videos [linked to my review of the offer]

Sure, at first these emails can be a little bit time consuming to write but they do provide an existing customer experience and are a great sales and marketing strategy to employ.

A Brief Summary

Making sure you get as many targeted leads from your website as possible is very important.

Create a highly a highly targeted list full of your ideal customer, and then follow up with these people in the right way and it is hard not to see a degree of success.

Remember, people opt-in when you promise something congruent and of value.

Entertain and educate via email and, where appropriate, offer your own products or affiliate offers to help them out.

They are people, not numbers.

Treat them how you would like to be treated.
